The meaning of the Mayan word Chack Mool is jaguar’s footprint. The cenote is one of the most spectacular in the Yucatan peninsula.
The most beautiful things are the wonderful light game created by the sunrays that penetrate the cavern , hitting in many different ways the several rooms forming the cenote. The whole thing is also more interesting with the halocline , the mix of the fresh water and the salt water that gets into the cenote from the ocean.
During the dive , plants and roots of any size dive into the cenote giving us wonderful effects.

Located south than Akumal, in the Tulum area, 40 minutes from the resort by car, Angelita is must do for advanced divers who are looking for something a little different
The name means “little angel” in English and there may not be a better way to describe this magical dive site.
The setting is perfect as you walk a short distance through the jungle to the rather large hidden away cenote.
To describe it simply this cenote does nothing else but go straight down 200 feet. Fresh water with unlimited visibility makes up the first one hundred feet and salt water the other half is separated by a mystical layer of hydrogen sulphate.
This layer in the middle appears as a dense cloud from the top and strange coloured hue from the bottom. Bring your dive lights, as you will need them if you are going to penetrate through to the bottom.
There are not many dives in the world where you can dive in the clouds at 100 feet and see trees, but this is one.

Akumal is not only known from the divers for the beautiful ocean and the wonderful reefs but also for being so close to the amazing Cenotes. wonderful underground river and cave systems that run under this fascinating land that is the Yucatan peninsula.
The geology of this land is considered unique all over the world and many are the theories trying to explain the its special conformation. The most important one declares that the whole peninsula used to be in the third age a huge and unique completely submerged platform that emerged during the centuries due to the drop of the sea level. this was also the reason of the death of the marine creatures that contributed to the carsick formation of the earth.
This particular structure works as a huge sponge capable to absorb and filter the smallest drop of water.
For this reason along the centuries fresh water rivers had been formed inside it, that running for miles had corroded the rock forming the caves, caverns and channels filled with stalactites and stalagmites visible from the surface thanks to rocks’ …….
The ancient Mayan population considered these Cenotes (dzonot) sacred sites and today as well you can feel the beauty enjoying the unsual peace that surround these places. Akumal represents the perfect location for cenote diving, because divers can reach most of them in less than 30 minutes by car. As a recreational dive , everybody can dive the Cenotes either because of the shallow depth that doesn’t exceed the 15 mt / 45 ft , the incredible visibility and temperature of the water, the passages that are always wide and bright. The environment is a unique one, you will be able to dive between stalactites and stalagmites , with the sun rays entering from the cracks on the ceiling that seems to cut the water like a blade. An expert and professional guide to lead you to discover this incredible world !!
