Local

Akumal in the Mayan language means "Place of the turtles", but for the scuba divers it also means barracudas, stub nose pompanos, tawny nurse sharks, barrier reef fish and plenty of corals.
The marvellous reef that protects the bay is, in fact, the right place for amazing diving experiences among big and splendid canyons populated with all kind of fauna from corals to sponges.
Besides, the average temperature of 28°C and the good visibility make diving possible throughout the year in an easy and very pleasant way, thanks to the softly descending reef.
Akumal features at least 15 diving places all located along the three miles of coral reef in front of the village and thus reachable by boat within few minutes.

Cozumel

Once arrived at Akumal, it is highly recommended to visit the protected habitat of the Cozumel Island which is the greatest marine park of the Caribbean Sea.  The currents that lightly touch these coasts have provided an ideal habitat for so many species.
You can find here a fully populated ambient, a triumph of sponges with various shapes - barrel, organ pipe, multi-coloured bowl - and wonderful corals.
The island can be reached by ferry that daily connects the neighbour town of Playa del Carmen with San Miguel, the island’s capital.
The underwater visibility at Cozumel is the best you can find in the Caribbean Sea, with an average between 30 and 60 meters. The always present current will allow you to dive without moving the fins and enjoy the panorama submerged.
There are many diving places all with different features. Successively, we mention the most famous:

Ocean Dive

Akumal and the Mayan Riviera…paradise on earth for scuba divers!
The coral reefs that run along the 4 bays of Akumal are considered to be the longest of the western hemisphere, offering a great variety of underwater sceneries.
They range from enormous coral sprawls of 10-12 meters to suggestive canyons with deeper immersion points.
The absence of strong currents makes Akumal the ideal place for inexperienced scuba divers and for those approaching this exciting sport for the first time.
All the diving points are located next to the coast and therefore are reachable by boat within few minutes.
The proximity to the Playa del Carmen, only 30 minutes by car from Akumal, gives us the possibility to weekly organize full day in the famous Island of Cozumel, reachable with a fast ferryboat which departs from the main dock of the town.

Diving in Cozumel

Diving in the waters of Cozumel is a unique experience! Marine Park since 1961, thanks to the contribution of its discoverer J.J.Costeau, the island features a spectacular coral reef. With strong currents which are the perfect appeal for pelagic life, it offers to the scuba divers a show of intact corals, giant sponges, breathtaking walls and fish of all kinds.
In these waters you can find all that the Caribbean Sea has to offer.
